Rick Tae --
Director’s Notes
I was recently reprimanded
for calling the musical, “Baby”, simple.
“How could you
not find the birth of a child incredible? It’s much deeper, intense
and complicated than you think! The music and lyrics should move you to
tears!!!”
With much respect to
my dear friends and colleagues, please consider this: - The number of
you who jumped at my throat on those occasions, in turn, actually justifies
what I had originally meant to say. Simply that everyone can relate to
the story. The show doesn’t sink in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.
The show doesn’t assassinate a president. The show, unfortunately,
doesn’t even have a helicopter.
But what it does have,
is raw, truthful and yes, extraordinary emotions: that of having a child
of our own, or even that of being a child ourselves, to which every single
one of us can relate.
As a young director
with much to look forward to, I’ve found the desire to initially
draw inspiration from shows that speak to all of us; to discover the pure
emotions that stem from issues with family, marriage, commitment, friends
and love – all intrinsic in the core with any project, but exposed
to the bone with “Falsettos” back in January, and now “Baby”,
and soon, “Company” in November.
So, I hope you enjoy
what I have to offer at this time. I must admit that this show has brought
to my attention for the first time, the generosity of my parents’
young love, which is the one and only reason why I’m even here on
this earth today.
Thank you everyone,
for having babies. It’s amazing how love can be so powerful.
